Community Question Quest #30 Do You See Gaming Retail Stores Surviving With The Current Rise of Digitally Downloadable Games?
I love walking into my local retail store, but recently I've been reading a bit of news over there current future. There's evidence that downloading games are on the rise! So I want to know if you see them surving at all. Do you prefer them still? Give you thoughts below as well!
Here is a Google+ Poll with only two options.

  1. I see them surviving simply because physical games are much better.

  2. Nope, unless you consider amazon as retail store.

  3. People who actually want to own their games will continue to buy physical.

  4. I personally don't like to download games if I can help it. I like having a physical copy of something. That way i could sell or trade it with someone. Also, I like looking at my old games on my shelf. It reminds me of fun times I've had. And when I get a special edition or steel case version of it, it's just a nice thing to have; like a collectable. I don't get the same feeling when I just see the name of a game listed on my screen.

  5. The satisfaction of having a physical copy of the game keeps me buying them. Though I do have quite a few digitally downloaded.

  6. Its hard to say because of Amazon and ebay.

  7. People dont want to leave their house much these days. Thats why a lot of clothing stores and malls are closing. Its sad but if you can press add to cart and wait 2 days then thats what people will do over driving to the store. I personally love my gamestop. I hope they dont close

  8. Brick and mortar gaming stores will be gone within 20 years. Only second hand shops might survive

  9. Not sure, they'll certainly drop in sales due to digital but I believe retail stores will survive. Offline gamers still exist and I know a lot of casuals won't buy an extended Hard drive. I personally no longer buy physical copies anymore because consoles will eventually stop reading disk over time, it happened to just about all my previous consoles & even some of my new consoles had problems reading disk because they were defected, you don't have to deal with all that bs with digital and it's so much easier to switch between games.

  10. Oh yeah, as I strongly prefer holding and owning a physical copy.
Especially with Nintendo going full retard with all their required services.

  11. Physical copies will die off in a decade or two, nowadays the game disc has to install 50 plus gigs of data even with the disc, so there isn’t really a point using disc games

    ReplyDelete
  12. Dwyane Wade Over Your Fav Player well we could install them on to a USB stick.

    ReplyDelete
  13. technology productions 2018 And sell them at gaming stores?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, part of the problem with Digital is transferrence. you can't just hand off an old copy to somebody else... in that sense, digital distribution has a lot to catch up to. Also, not everybody has broadband internet to be downloading multi-gigabyte installs.

I think the retail stores are doing themselves a disservice (or at least GameStop) by not paying for used games at decent prices and selling them back at barely-less-than-new...

  15. WavesOnWhite Sand I personally can't understand that. I'm pretty tall and have a slim build so I find it better to drive to where I'm getting my clothes and trying them on right there and then deciding to buy it.

  16. Surviving but more are probably gonna are probably gonna close with only places like Game and Gamestop being in cities or bigger towns.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dwyane Wade Over Your Fav Player incase the system tells you you don't own the game or app lol

    ReplyDelete
  18. I hope so, because I don’t like download-only games. Feels like you don’t own anything.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, i prefer them. They're the reason i plan to buy next year's games on PS4.

  20. I have to drive over 20km to get to my nearest retail store so I'm falling under the spell of fast download speeds and easy access. And I have to say that all my games prior to my recent purchase of my PS4 were done in store, and that's PC Xbox and PS3 even my first 5 PS4 games were purchased in store, at my local pawn shop I should add for a discounted price but still. Now all is done on line, due to ease, simplicity and savings,(we don't have to fuel up). I do miss my store experience though and having a physical copy of the game. And so I don't see the retail stores surviving unless something is changed in the way they operate, do business and or how they treat their customers.

  21. Yes I hope they will Survival. I mean without Hastings game store gone. I hope they can stay open...

  22. Human Creativity thats what I'm saying lmao. People are strange

    ReplyDelete
  23. Downloading games takes longer, takes more memory, relys on a bank account or gift card which younger players wouldn't have access too, and physical copies can't be corrupted. So yes I prefer retail than downloading.

    ReplyDelete
  24. True. I can't download a games. Because I don't have a Wi-Fi or the internet on my games.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Unfortunately physical is the only way to assure ownership. I wish I could install them on disk to improve speed though

    ReplyDelete
  26. technology productions 2018 How?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Physical disk matters a lot to people with poor Network connectivity in some countries also the digital copies are not permanently owned by us according to disclaimer of such as steam, they can just remove them from their store and our copy is gone forever if we have not kept the copy (we can't redownload even if we own that game) eg F1 2013 I think. More game might be removed without notice soon, but physical copies will be good. Also I like to have a collection of games on shelf's and it's nice to have collectors edition with full extra game details. But to be honest people really don't care anymore for physical copies which I love to own.

  28. Even if all games become download only, physical store will still exist. They don't just sell games.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Clifford Singh But a majority of games I get now only have half the game on the disk, without WiFi I can't play them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I really don’t want streaming to be the next big thing but If it does happen game retailers won’t survive

    ReplyDelete
  31. there are two major issues with digital copies; 1, storage, not everyone has the capabilities to store 3 to 5 TB worth of games and would eventually have to delete then redownload when they want to replay a game or two, 2, price, currently with digital costing the same there is no real incentive to go digital other than not needing to load a disk to play.

    ReplyDelete
  32. there are also companies wanting to start cloud gaming services for those who don't want to invest fully into a gaming rig, storage or console. (I don't see that lasting long)

looking at dvds, as a comparison, they still sell plenty even though the high popularity in streaming services and there are those who might see a movie on netflix but still buys the DVD.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I doubt they will die. Too many people enjoy physical instead of digital.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Not to mention alot of us don't have the financial ability to afford buying online or cloud storage that isn't for free either. Plus, I like to be able to pop a disc in and play. And with Nintendo being the way it is, I'm sure they'll keep the brick and mortar stores open for the rest of us.....unless they open their own store just for them, then we're screwed. Lol. But seriously I really don't see gaming stores going out of business. And if they do there's always Walmart, Bestbuy, Frys, Target and the like that'll have some sort of section for games as well as used movies and games exchange stores.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Rose tyler I agree with this 100%
Physical copies are amazing. Especially when you own a series ex. Assassins creed, or final fantasy etc. Like owning books lol

    ReplyDelete
  36. Digital games are sooooo much better. These stores will die off

    ReplyDelete
  37. Nathaniel Clay but it's still better than downloading the whole game in digital copies, nowadays we have to download 50% because of day 1 patches which developers include to avoid early leaks because of digital release.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nemeses SS-BrigadeFührer physical cipies can be corrupted

    ReplyDelete
  39. Clifford Singh having half of a game on the disc is better...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Downloads don't give physical collectors set. I buy those often and love getting beautiful art books, sound tracks and figurines. So no. I don't care for digital myself. I prefer to have the real game in hand. Besides some games aren't even available anymore on digital.
Plus, some retail outlets offer customers digital or physical so they'll still be ok.

  41. I think they will survive just as dvd's and cd's are still being made and sold as they could just as easily be bot online and the music be taken off of youtube but if all did that i think they would take music off youtube or force you to buy them. But i think it will be at a smaller scale. I have not seen what the gamestop where i live how it's been doing but walmart has not had the new system's there for long and xbox one stuff is on rollback and i think only like 2 xbox one's they had on hand i could see but the gaming place is not as big as it once was and the demos place to try out some of the game's has not been on so they must be getting really to take it away or just stopping it. It's a sad site to see.

    ReplyDelete
  42. YOU KNOW DOWNLOADING SOME ONLINE GAMES CANNOT LET YOU PLAY IT ONLINE ESPECIALLY GAMES WHICH HAVE TO BE CONNECTED WITH STEAM

    ReplyDelete
  43. Gawble's Entertainment Depends were you live, my Walmarts are always stocked with the latest. But that's here in Texas. I, mean I'm guessing here. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  44. FOX FM most steam games require a one time online activation, but after that, they can be played while offline. Not all, but most.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Rose tyler I live in Maine, are walmart that i go to had them since they have been out but it's like they are starting to take the stuff down and lowering the price's of all the xbox stuff and headphone's and what not and the new xbox has not even come out yet and they have ps4 and the switch and the new old school mini console's to buy but not as big as it once was. They have moved stuff around and place for the game's is smaller then before. How big is the gaming area in the walmart in Texas ?

    ReplyDelete
  46. The stores will survive.. there just won't be a GameStop on every corner anymore. There's plenty of older gamers like myself that prefer physical games.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nathaniel Clay yes better than having none.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Andy Herche and that's sorta why retro game stores might boom, I mean especially with Nintendo ripping rooms down and collectors becoming more frequent

    ReplyDelete
  49. Clifford Singh but when the disc break on accident you'll be happy it's still on the console or it's cloud service...well just don't break the console lol

    ReplyDelete
  50. Nathaniel Clay If the console break's you just buy a new console and go into your account and you can get all your game's downloaded again

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nathaniel Clay I got your point but the DVDs never break easily like 700mb CDs do, which are more than decade old to mention it. I never had a DVD break inside my PC nor my consoles or even my Blu-ray player yet, the only disc that broke and spoilt my new PC drive was back in 2004 which was actually due to the defective CD which was already cracked at the centre yet I wanted to use it and it was my favorite disc too of my Beatles collection 😢. Also we buy Game DVDs for a reason such as for collectors edition which Amber Short mentioned we love to showcase such games which contains figurines and even music Vinyls in some games like ni no Kuni 2. Also as I mentioned earlier cloud games expire at certain date DVDs will last a very long time.

  52. Gawble's Entertainment that's great if the servers are still up. But it won't be long till the they shut down PS3 and 360 servers. Probably should buy some external drives and make a backup

    ReplyDelete
  53. Clifford Singh true tbh it's a good thing to also do what Andy Herche said, find a way to rip that thing to a hard drive or something for preservation, it's always a safe route ig

    ReplyDelete
  54. Gawble's Entertainment medium size, yet you can still find what you need. And if not my local gamestop is pretty big, and several other smaller ones, but still find stuff. Also movie and exchange stores as well as game exchange ones. But I live in a big city, so stuffs easier to find and get too.

  55. I mean, surviving in the sense that record player stores are still ‘surviving’. But I wouldn’t call it surviving. It’s a dying industry and only the niche will thrive. Think Blockbuster circa 2005

    ReplyDelete
  56. I prefer physical. 1700 of them. But buy digital also. Have no choice on PC.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I prefer having digital copies only because I know if i get bored of a game of decide it wasn't worth it, I can sell/trade it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That feeling when u find the game u've been wanting to buy from the store shelf and buying it...digitally downloading the game is nowhere near that
