Are The Prices Of Virtual Reality Headsets And Add-On's Too Expensive For Normal Consumers? (Community Poll #11)
So recently I was reading up on the specs and recommended hardware for VR (Includes Sony's) and notice either a majority of them required other add-on hardware to get them to run such as a GPU or weird controller. This did make the price of them a lot more pricey than i expected. Do you think its too much cash/prices way too high? Does this effect you from getting one? I would love to know!

  1. They're way to expensive for the normal video game consumers and no one will use them casually

  2. I Couldn't Think Of A Username so I made this one Ive used the SDK2 and I see the price now and im waiting for a price drop.

  3. Currently, yes the price is a bit steep for the majority of users but as vr gains traction and in the next few generations of the tech the price of both the headset and the pc to run it will have dropped enough for it to be viable for the majority. I've got my rift pre-ordered but I fall well into the enthusiast gamer category

  4. Like I said when I first heard about it, when it gets like sword art online or no game no life, then I'll be interested.

  5. The thing that makes them expensive are the logos itself

  6. When you say "Normal Consumers" they are people who have jobs right? Of course they are affordable.

  7. Nhoy Barangay im a normal consumer, I cant afford this. just becuase I work doesn't mean off the bat, i can afford a VR helmet, it is too expensive for a normal consumer like me

  8. You remeber what you paid for a flat screen TV when they was new? Much more than a VR headset. I think they a cheap.

  9. Meanwhile a PS4 costs 2300₪ In Israel ... Thats 800 bucks lmao

  10. Mobile Nigro I completely agree with you, I have a job but I also have bills to pay.

  11. Yes they are priced too high for normal consumers. They're priced for early adopter's and enthusiasts.

  12. The only relatively cheap one is PSVR, and it has better games than the other two.

  13. Gen 2/3 should really come down in price. Right now it will just be the earliest adopters with spare cash.

  14. If I can't play current games on vr it's just a gimmick

  15. This is early technology. New stuff is always expensive when it first comes out. At this point it's not meant for normal consumers anyway. Give it a couple years. The price will drop.

  16. It will most likely be niche market the first few year, maybe less than 5% of steam users will buy it. It has potential to become more mainstream.
Everyone was talking how touch screen was the next big thing, then 3D televison, then kinect. It all depends on how big companies handle it and there is no point in making speculation at this point.

  17. I think they are too expensive, unless you eat sleep and breathe gaming and get your money's worth out of them.

  18. Virtual reality has been out for a looooong time...I remember using it when I was a kid! (Currently 37) considering as much as it costs then and the prices now? If the normal consumer can afford a ps4, xbox one, gaming pc, and other expensive "normal consumer items" then no. It's really not that expensive.

  19. Nathan Cramer It costs as much as a medium range gaming PC.
As much as a high end monitor, and if you look at the steam hardware survey how many people use bigger than 1080p resolution, its like 2,5%.

  20. Jorge Pacheco I don't really think you will want to play current style games. It will only really shine with experiences that are tailored to VR from the start.

  21. I don't have much faith in VR so to me it seems like a gaint waste of money.

  22. Yes, because game developers work so hard to make a VR with real-like graphics. It suks that it's pricey but, i'll give 'em credit for doing it

  23. People pay 800$ for just a phone... it's easy to forget since you usually pay it off via a contract. A tv could run you more then 1000$ depending on the size and this is a display that takes up your feild of vision. It's really not a lot that they're asking especially since it is brand new technology. But the obvious point remains, just cuase you can't afford something doesn't mean they won't sell.

Also danny dircio calling these "virtual boy 2.0" is about the most ridiculous thing I've read all year. I just can't even...

  24. Dave Stone Phones are more of a status symbol, you feel social preasure to have the latest model. Noone buys a new phones for their features.
And usually more than one person watches the TV.

  25. Dave Stone ikr?

I think VR is finally around for real this time. For anyone who's used it, I think it's obvious just how awesome it really is and can be. I've only used a Gear VR (which is extremely affordable if you have a Samsung phone) and was very impressed for what was done with so little. All new tech is expensive and gets cheaper with time. Imagine how great VR will be in five years, when it's had time to mature and become more affordable/pervasive.

  26. High, but reasonable for the technology and you could be an early adopter. It's definetly not for the casual audiance if you didn't know it already.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Law Rocks I think its very reasonable and its still neew technology how much was an xbox360 worth when it came out and how much now

    ReplyDelete
  28. No they're not. You think they are but unless you have a PC worth a couple grand you can't drive them. So people need to stop complaining about this. Yes they're expensive but the amount you'll spend on a PC to run it will change that viewpoint. They're not for normal consumers at this point. In 5 years sure but now? No way.

  29. I Couldn't Think Of A Username so I made this one Yep anyone who thinks VR is a gimmick has never even used it. This tech is just not cheap people

  30. They are BUT this has always been the way with PC gaming for the latest and greatest, and even so- the hardcore gamers will work extra and save to get them anyway...

  31. The mainstream consumers were never the initial audience. I remember buying a video card for $450 back in 2001. Enthusiast audience always pays more. Everybody else can bitch and wait :P

  32. Kenneth Ravanilla the logos, really?

  33. XQSOYUNCASUAL?? XQ?XQ?XQ? It is both true and funny

  34. Right now it's more in the enthusiast stage but I could save up and get the vive and I'm not rich.

  35. For as expensive they are it might become a novelty thing and a thing of the past. If they want VR to catch on they need to have 1. The price to go down 2. try to get more immersive games 3. solve the touch problem( no handles or controllers) they need to have some type of pressure sensitive gloves for more "interactive" play.

  36. Brandon Bailey these are all the exact same problem thst all emergent technologies face. When HD TVs came out they were expensive and had limited content, and now look where we are. Until we get a holodeck, VR is the next step in entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jonathan Dagnillo Yes I agree. But I would like to see V.R with a glove type controller. It would have touch feedback capabilities that mimic weight and mass.

    ReplyDelete
  38. RadicalRooster gaming yeah, that's why there need to be early adopters so they get more money and develop the current tech further so it gets cheaper.

  39. If you knew that what's coming you would rather invest in food storage and survival

  40. I work and I'm getting a psvr when it releases.

  41. Đävïđ Μørrisøn I have 2yrs of food, and money storage saved up. I have access to a remote cabin and fresh water. Gunas and ammo. Got it covered bro

  42. danny dircio you have little to no idea what the fuck your talking about...

    ReplyDelete
  43. danny dircio I'm still just soaking in this one line from what you said "VR systems improved a little bit" ... A LITTLE BIT??? FROM VIRTUAL BOY!!?? ... a little bit... just a little eh? Haha holy fuck

    ReplyDelete
  44. Google cardboard is $20, 4k graphics, and there's 100's of vr/AR games on play store. Half of which are free

    ReplyDelete
  45. danny dircio looks around we? ... are you trying to act like there is a single person in agreeance with your asinine comparison between a machine released in 1995 (21 years) void of even color (except that lovely red) let alone a single 3D image. Basically a glorified Gameboy on a stand that was almost and entirely void of anything "virtual"... to HTC ? A huge achievement and combination of insanely advanced technology? Just do a little research and you might share my perspective...

  46. Kenneth Ravanilla I don't understand your point, it's not like apple has made one...
