With PC Hardware Rapidly Advancing At A Faster Pace, Will We See Shorter Console Life Spans? (Community Poll#6)
It just dawned on me that out of the gate even the PS4 and XBox One equally have issues running some games themelves. I already know the advantage of owning one is ease of use, but performance wise, I did have disadvantages, something I did not get from last gen consoles till they aged more and PC hardware advancing faster than ever in the performance area than log ago and consoles are PC's themselves in many ways. Will this shorten the 8th gen consoles lives? Will we be seeing a PS5 or XBox Two faster than ever?

Only if the cost of the hardware decreases at the same rate that new technologies are increasing.
ReplyDeletePs5 is already a concept and the market is already too large to destroy. It would be tearing out part of the economy.
ReplyDeleteYe I think this gen will last about 4 to 5 more years cuz if Nintendo have announced the nx what is their next gen console what is reported to be 2x more powerful than the xbox one and ps4
ReplyDeleteMatthew Carter Have you heard of something called moore's law?
ReplyDeleteConsole gens get longer begause pc hardware increase has slowed and with higher graphics the difference becomes smaller. This gen and last gen have basically same graphics.
ReplyDeleteMatt Worthy Yeah Nintendo has a shot at coming out really strong this year. If it comes put with a highly suped up system, watch out!
ReplyDeleteMatthew Carter yes it was well to long a gen should be no more than 5-6 years long cuz after that the gen gets stale
ReplyDeletePC advancements are starting to slow down (also nowdays most advancements in PC market go towards lowering power consumption, not performance). We already have all the performance average user needs. We're starting to hit physical limitations and I saw Moore's law wobbling when buying a new laptop.
ReplyDeleteNikke 2800 No they don't, the graphics are a lot better on current gen, do you even have a current gen console?
ReplyDeleteNo. Are you aware of Moores "law"? There is a limit to how many transistors you can put on a chip, and we're already at what? 15nm technology? I believe the limit is 5 or 3 nm. My point is, that progress should be slowing down until a new technology is invented. Granted it will still be fast, but not as exponentially fast as everyone believed
ReplyDeletejordan hartman I play on pc. When i look at games like crysis 3 or battlefield 3 and compare them to current gen games i don't see a difference.
ReplyDeleteIf I can build a pc that's in the same price range as a PS4 than yes it will. PC hardware is rapidly advancing that its more affordable at this point and sorta does run games better than my console could. Something I would be saying the opposite for last gen consoles.

ReplyDeleteYep we'll have to wait and see what it is
SuperSaiyanBlast totally agree with you, that seems reasonable. I actually think that could happen as well. I slightly find it troubling though, it would be easier to see them as Netflix like services.
ReplyDeleteJustin Trein I believe Moore's law was disproved and is no longer a thing.
ReplyDeleteFor me it's going to be the EXACT same as for Apple Computer. Console will simply be PC (as Apple) with PC hardware (as Apple), embedded in a "nice" case (as Apple), and software blocked to makes you think it's a console (kind of as Apple)
ReplyDeleteHave consoles ever really tried to keep up with PCs? You could upgrade your GPU every few months if you really wanted. I don't care if a console is as powerful as a high end PC as long as the games are good.
ReplyDeleteI love PC gaming. It's what I prefer. With that said, I NEVER want consoles to die out. I want the market to be ripe with competition. After all, healthy competition is what pushes gaming to become better every day. Trust me, you don't want only one source available to gaming. The consumer will have less power/choices over what they want.
ReplyDeleteGrym Smith Yeah, if everyone has PCs, then there will be no incentive to continue creating affordable and powerful hardware
ReplyDeleteUnless console producers can figure out a modular system and a system with the same type of encryption with non-compatibility with everything else on the market to keep with the temporary monopoly of new well looking games (with ease of use)... Then no, because they cant keep the money flowing as easily. You get low tech, with high tech locks, with low configurations, options etc.. Is what it is.
ReplyDeleteSince PS4 and XB1 both have shit hardware, they will not last long.
ReplyDeleteI don't even own a PC that can run games.
PC wishes. Not everyone wants to keep buying stuff for PC just make it look good. PC is better off sticking to solitaire
ReplyDeleteMoore's law just ended. We've gotten transistors pretty much as small as we can get them and still have them work. Companies are now shifting their focus on making them more energy efficient as opposed to small.
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari Someone's salty.
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari salt intensifies
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari we can go into an actual argument if you want. I suppose I'll start.
ReplyDelete1. You don't optimise programs to run on a motherboard. You do, however, have to optimise games for GPUs. Although thanks to DirectX, they don't have to optimise the games for every graphics card, just AMD and Nvidia in general.
2. We complain about shoddy ports because companies shouldn't be shoving out garbage and expecting us to buy it. That's called being a smart consumer.
3. Arkham Knight had such a bad port that the devs gave up on it. If we want to play it it, the game only costs $40 on steam. And if we don't want to play it, that's just fine because there are over 10,000 other games we can choose from.
SuperSaiyanBlast I think he was just trying to promote discussion. I think PC vs. Console debates are quite fun, as long as things stay civil.
ReplyDeleteThe Nice Poodle pc was always supreme depending on how good yours is.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's an issue with performance technology if you want shorter console generations. I think it's an issue of how many games a publisher can get out of it. A lot of games take a long time to release. They don't just spit out a new game every year like battlefield and cod.
ReplyDeleteEric Dumont games like GTA V are perfect examples IMO, on the Xbox one and ps4 I have laggy framrates with that game, but on PC I rarely have performance issues.
ReplyDeleteConsoles are here to stay nothing to do with pc hardware, pc hardware is made to empty bank account is not for you to enjoy it, intel already has 6th gen cpu so anyone who bought pc last year is already out of date/worth $200 less, Lmao
ReplyDeleteMobile Nigro well more in depth as to what I was getting at for consoles is that if you don't make consoles last long enough per generation, a lot of games are always online. So a lot of what you "buy" is really just a rental until a developer or publisher decides to pull the plug because what really matters is saving costs and focusing on current gen.
ReplyDeleteAlso I like to see real differences between each console generation so that it really feels special and unlike the previous ones. Consoles shouldn't be made to try and catch up to pc standards.
dave sousa Intel barely upgrades their CPU's. Even if you have a CPU several years behind your not missing much. And no, you don't have to upgrade all the time. If you built a $400 PC that beats the PS4 note it will still beat the PS4 5 years from now.
ReplyDeleteYou I doubt that since kids will still want consoles for their games and I doubt they have the money for a gaming pic most of them at least and I doubt their parents will go the of route but that's just me..
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari Actually there is like 15,000 games on steam.
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari and when I'm older I'll likely still have console.
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari The only one I see whining is you. You don't like PC cool but it's still far superior to consoles no amount of butt hurt will change that. Why would I choose to play the same game with worse frame rates and worse graphics and worse resolution? I still have a Xbox One for exclusives not going to miss out on games. But if the game is available for PC too I will buy it for PC and enjoy 1440p at 60fps maxed out.
ReplyDeletePC hardware has always been rapidly advancing. The console life-cycle has changed yet so I doubt it every will unless they stop making consoles.
ReplyDeleteEven if there is a new console cycle in the next 3 years it will still only be an small difference. The days of large jumps between consoles like PS1/PS2 are over. I'm not paying another $500 now to get a few more FPS
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari Na it's kinda a fact that you can't accept. 720-900p is not as good as 1440p-4K or equal. 30-very rarely 60fps compared to 60-144fps is not better or equal. Choice on what input device I want to use its nice to go from a controller while driving to keyboard and mouse when shooting in GTA V for example is better then only having a controller. To top it off I have basically endless backwards compatibility. Along with emulators for all my old console games I played when I was a kid. Can also hook my PC up to a TV if I wanted to. Again can't force you to like PC but they are better then consoles that's just a fact.
ReplyDeleteAri My Shadow Emasculates Me Shinohari Actually there are a lot of good games. And most of them are not on consoles.
ReplyDeleteYou what to join Minecraft lovers
ReplyDeleteWell will phones stop providing internet????
ReplyDeleteSuperSaiyanBlast Those consoles were advanced for their time. Hell, even 360 and PS3 were pretty for their time. The PS4 and XB1 were released underpowered to keep cost down. Still love my PS4 though.
ReplyDeleteI had both consoles then I sold them for very very price ..then I build my own PC and I recommend PC in every way
ReplyDeleteConsoles WASTE OF MONEY
ReplyDeleteTo tell the truth I like the Wii and XB1,if anything consoles will become more popular!
ReplyDeleteNot a waste when you have kids that enjoy playing, and young adults.
ReplyDeleteEntertainment costs... so enjoy!
ReplyDeleteNO!!!!!!!😈
ReplyDeleteNO PC'S IT'S ALL READY IPHONE6 SO STOP
ReplyDeleteChange is necessity but to in the progress, changing one thing regularly with a small replacement really sucks. Thats why only we like playing on PC and not on consoles (untill and unless the game is only available for consoles)
