Is Video Game Piracy Having A Major Impact On The Gaming Industry And Individual Publishers? (Community Poll #5)
This poll is towards the fellow Gamers of the community because I recently read up on gaming piracy in the news and just wanted to know what your personal opinion on gaming piracy is. Does it actually impact big companies or small ones? Does it have its advantages? Would love to know what your thoughts are! #piracy #gaming #companies

  1. Well if everyone did it...then game developers don't get paid.

    If they don't get paid...they don't work.

  2. Video game drm is a step in the right direction, but it ruins certain games lately. I was forced to pirate an always online game becuase shitty support from the devs. Im not into pc piracy, console modding and whatever else is out there but I deserve to OWN what I buy.

  3. Max Echendu that's very limited idea. People pirate stuff primarily to try it. I pirate to fix issues (dead space does not run on z170 platforms due to drm, so I cracked it to be able to play. Is that fair? Without piracy I would be unable to play my bought game). Others because they refuse to pay 60 euros for a 2 hour campaign. Others because. It offers the comfort of not leaving home (which now tons of e store offer as well). Truth is, most kids that pirate, end up buying the stuff years later. My steam library has 277 games on it, many I pirated years ago and wanted to keep. Had I not tried then back then, I would have been unable to have fond memories of them, and would probably not have bought them. Piracy is/was a means to a need where there was a vacuum, and thus made no difference, because those pirating would not buy it regardless. Now it's different. People buy tons during sales. So I don't see what the issue is.

  4. Piracy definitely isn't the reason big companies are losing out on money bit it does have an affect.
Practically 60% of wii owners where pirates and Nintendo still got big bank off that console

  5. JAJAvsWORLD where did you get that 60% out of? I'd like to read the research. Having an effect is different from being the end of it all like some portray it to be. There is an effect of course. When companies pump out crappy and rehashed games year after year, piracy turns rampant. Check the sales of the Witcher 3, and the sales (after being free!) of the Witcher 1 and 2. It's mostly policy. Good games sell. Crap ones don't. Just because people pirate them doesn't mean they would feel forced to pay for them if they hadn't. The reason to pirate goat simulator (as an example) could be boredom, curiosity. Doesn't mean people will shell out!60 euros for it.

  6. Pedro Liberal the 60% was an educated guess based off easy it was to softmod a wii and how wild everyone wasn going with it but im sure its lower. Point is the wii was pretty much a pirate console and it still made a fuck ton of money. Piracy does have an affect on sales but its an insignificant affect.
Most games pirated are games people wouldn't pay for in the first place. There are those that just pirate everything because they can but thats only so few people.
If your game is failing its probably because it sucks.
Convenience stores don't blame theives when they take a loss

  7. Obviously the Master races will try every kind of argument to say they are not guilty but is because of them console games are expensive then end with rubbish sales so to be claimed the game was crap but when the prices lower everyone buys it, Master Races killed Dead space, Quake, nearly killed tomb raider if wasn't for Microsoft, Half life, Piracy and Master Races = brothers in Army

  8. Doesn't have much impact, its just something companies like to point out as a scapegoat. Times game downloaded doesn't mean lost profit. Most people who pirate wouldn't have bought the game, its just alot easyer to pirate so if you have a limited outcome, you would do some research if you will like the game or not, but when you can pirate it you can just download it and see if you will like it without knowing much about it.
Also most of the time the pirated version has no online features, severely limited multiplayer, half the time mods dont work, doesn't get updates and patches, so if you liked the game and had the money you would prefer to buy it anyway.

  9. JAJAvsWORLD Agreed. Piracy does damage but not enough to have a big impact.

  10. dave sousa pc is seen as extra to most third party companies or the small pleasure they get to have seeimg games run the way they should. Games these days are so expensive because people want so much out of their games for so little. Games should be worth a 100$ but no one would buy them if they were. Thats why we have so much dlc and microtransactions these days. Games are expensive to make but people don't want to pay much.

Hell if not for pc you wouldn't have most of your games because they're all originally made on pc before they rework them to console

    ReplyDelete
  11. JAJAvsWORLD games run the way they should? Hahaha another master race with idiotic comments, do you think they release a game to run the way they want or the way costumer wants? There is people with Direct x9 and 10, graphics card wile Microsoft has DX12 and huge $ for graphics cards to make the full use of it, others with old one can't run hardware so its software and struggle to render it then go online claiming they have better graphics than consoles wich clearly they don't, that's one cause on piracy games run shit on the Master race pc so they go pay $600 for card they pirate everything eles including windows that's why games on pc is cheaper, anything more than $25 is pirated at insane number

  12. I feel it does impact gaming ( especially indie developers ). IMO, there are only two reasons to think that piracy is acceptable:

1- you can't access the game in your country
2- if the game is so old that you can't find a copy for it.

Other than these, I can't find a justifiable reason to pirate anything.

    ReplyDelete
  13. dave sousa dude you're just spitting out of your ass. You can't seriously think that consoles are running these games as good as a decent pc.
Pc games come out at 60$ the same as consoles. They only drop in price so fast because companies make the bulk of their money on console. It has nothing to do with piracy

    ReplyDelete
  14. dave sousa Or maybe they just dont live in a first world country and 60$ is close to a whole week avarage pay so they dont want to pay that much for a game and wait for a steam sale. Substitute 60$ for (avarage week pay in your country) and see how many games you would have bouth if they cost that much.

  15. Sly Devil what are talking about?
Number one piracy country is USA after that is everything on Europe

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sly Devil I'm sorry, but IMO your reasons aren't justifiable.

Just because a game doesn't get updates and some features, that's doesn't mean you can get it for free.

And you don't have to buy a game every week, you can buy one every month, buy used games and borrow/rent games.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sometimes Piracy lets people try out a game then they will buy it. But a lot of the time that doesn't happen. It is a double eged sword.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Piracy doesn't dictate sales, it's the quality of the game that does. Look at The Witcher 3, Dragon's Dogma and The Witness. All games with little to no DRM, but they still managed to get an imense number of sales on launch day. Same goes with Fallout 4. Badly implemented DRM (looking at you, Denuvo) is not in any way effective, nor helpful for everyone, not just pirates.

  19. David Davidson Maybe you could tell that last part to Micro$oft?
"The Windows 7 Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Piracy doesn't have nearly the impact as the cheap fickle consumer base. Unfortunately... :/

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sidney Rutledge We're talking about gaming piracy, aren't we?

    ReplyDelete
  22. David Davidson all 80% these sales was on console, if Master race pays $90 for a pc game he had pirated 1.2000.000.000 to justify what he pay

    ReplyDelete
  23. JAJAvsWORLD I mostly agree with your comment. Except that games aren't made for PC anymore. There actually ported to PC from console versions. Which is why so many PC versions of games have been having so many problems in the passed couple of years. There was a time games were made for PC and ported to consoles but that time is years passed...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Chris Bodovetz is that true? I always thought they made the games on pc but for the consoles which is why we always see massive downgrades in graphics when the console versions release

    ReplyDelete
  25. JAJAvsWORLD Yeah, not anymore. Take BO3, the latest Arkham game (I forget what it's called), GTA5. All these games were made for consoles and ported to PC. The Arkham game was even ported by a third party company. These are just a few examples of major releases.

  26. Well - cracking games sometimes makes it available for everyone - specially if they were prohibeted or too expensive

    ReplyDelete
  27. Michel Youssef lol. Not being able to afford something does NOT give you the right to steal it. What kind of logic is that? Everyone can't afford a Ferrari and that's"not fare" so they should just be able to steal one. That's ridiculous. Seriously!

    ReplyDelete
  28. MAG ARC Rephrased: "Piracy doesn't influence sales it's the quality of the game that does" meaning the loss that companies have in sales isn't necessarily the pirates fault, it's that their game isn't worth playing. Understood now?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Chris Bodovetz GTA V had a shaky launch despite running fine. It had broken missions that took multiple patches to fix. Arkham Knight was an all around shit stain and Black Ops 3...you might as well play it on a PlayStation or Xbox

  30. I have an idea and at the same time I want to copyright this suggestion as it is a scheme I want to try and launch myself. I think they should put "Piracy Guilt Buckets" in every game store stockist where people can enter a booth with no cameras what so ever with a notice written on the outside that legally keeps peoples identity private ok where if you liked a game so much but own a pirate copy u can pay by cash means only but type in the name of the game and then place the coins / cash that you feel you should pay for the game(s) you own

The money can then be sought at the end of the week/month when they empty the machines and shared to every games manufacturer in the country no matter how large or small so that it at least compensates and gives the games chart a more accurate representation of what people really like to play out there ... what do you think folks ? Obviously my company or the company that uses this idea perhaps Bitcoin .. who will then in turn pay me a percentage for my idea ( wink it's ok just covering myself sorry and all that ) at least 85 to 90% of the cash will go back to every developer in the world ... if the minimum people put into the "guilt fund" was say £2 and an unlimited maximum I think this would be a great way of at least recouping the cash lost as a result of piracy ..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Further up the line people could have an anonymous account where by way of a Guilt card you insert it and it allows you to actually pay off the full amount for the game even if its a penny a month ... once its fully paid guess what the reward is ?? The REAL game the machine will pop out a credit note which is the same as any other normal credit note but it will only allow you to buy the original version of the game u own a pirate copy of .. but how great is that clear conscious and u now have the real McCoy

  32. I'm sure it is a problem, but I don't think it's as big an issue as Publishers would have us believe. I think it's something convenient to blame when they don't want to face their own failures.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Arwun Piracy is only not much an issue because there is a larger amout of buyers than there are pirates (game freeloaders).

If everyone were to pirate games...I doubt game developers would class it as "a little bit of an issue".

It's a very big issue...just not large enough.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't know enough to make an intelligent comment

    ReplyDelete
  35. People who pirate are the ones responsible for microtransacions and are the scum of gaming

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rodney Nicotine Microtransactions started on mobie and free MMO games and was adopted later in AAA games, it was not something they came up with to combat piracy.
Do you realy believe that if piracy stopped right now developers will say "alright we made enough money we dont need any more"

    ReplyDelete
  37. There is no end to piracy, everyone with console has pc, games he or she thinks not worth paying huge money for it will just be downloaded, lowering prices on pc game won't end piracy, the only way to end it is bringing the software prices to a affordable number for all, downloading 50Gb vs pay $100 downloading win, downloading 50Gb vs pay $15/$10 pay win because the hassle and virus, trojan, and more troubles of downloads isn't worth $15.

  38. For a multi million company like EA it doesn't effect them at all, for independent game devs it's really effects them a lot.
