    It actually was excellent for FPS games at the time. Hence why the N64 had better FPS games than the PS. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, the Quake port...

    The actual reason for the strange shape is quite interesting, when the N64 came out 3D games were very new, Nintendo didn't realise yet that 3d games would so quickly replace (more or less) 2d games, so they designed a controller that can be used as easily for 2D gaming one hand on the dpad as it can for 3d gaming by moving one hand to the analogue stick.
