I think the market improved with the introduction of Casual games, then got oversaturated with mobile clones. I miss when game series had to be unique.
Back then there was massive hardware limits so developers had to be crafty, unique ,make the gamers imagine , and think. There's still great games today not making shots here as retro vs new. However anyone who grew up in this age can see that the quality focus on games has declined since then and the focus has been more shifted to make a profit then an experience. Luckily there is still people who were inspired by this age and continue to deliver amazing experiences. Bethesda does it right.
To be honest I suck at timing my jump especially in Donkey Kong I don't know about you but I wouldn't change a thing if I have a chance but I didn't grow up in 2000s
