Sure it needs a little loving once in awhile, but at least it waits for me to do the loving..

  17. Arch Linux, a hobbyist maintained distribution, can apply updates recompile the kernel without restarting while Windows, maintained by a full development team at Microsoft who almost hasn't touch the core source code of Windows since XP. Also, don't update to Windows 10: data collecting that can be used by Microsoft as they please and can't be disabled, peer to peer updates that use up bandwidth, and much more.

  18. SilverStar Heggisist I build my own, and I always buy a copy of windows on CD's so that I can re-install in case of failure, I also download all major service packs.
Try ripping a cd on Win Vista or above. Windows and Apple have both embedded copy protection in their OSes to be compatible with the HDMI specification so that hardware itself would refuse to record or display copyrighted material. It's called HDCP, so go ahead google it up. I realize that alot of people just stream from the internet but I'm an audio buff and prefer ripping high quality mp3's from CD's that I purchased and having the CD's as a backup. I have lost Mp3's to hiccups that were probably solar flares or spilt coffee.  I then stream them every where in my house to various rooms without HDCP raising it's ugly head. Including to my home theatre which is centered around a Network connected Onkyo receiver. The ripping and a few games I still like to play that won't play on Windows 7 is really the major reasons I keep an XP box, XP knows nothing about HDCP.
But honestly, I also have a Win 7 box, A Win 8 laptop. an iMac for my wife and a Linux Cinnamon 17.something box as well, as well as assorted samsung tablets, Ipad and 3 iPods and the endless smart phones. I have a media server set up and share the music and other media from the Linux box, such as pictures, some movies etc.. But I'm serious. I may never upgrade to 10. I did the registry fixes to prevent it upgrading me automatically. Anything a company wants to give you free to hook you in, isn't going to end up in your favor.
When It won't let me do what I want, I will quit it all together and just stay with Linux and the old XP. Or what ever the opensource market has for software rebels like me, when that day comes.
If more people were informed of issues like this, it probably wouldn't have made a difference, but it matters to me.

  24. Ben Saltz your info is so biased and incorrect, u can disable data colecting, it's so simple. Lol. Linux and windows are not the same os, restarting makes the update process much safer...

  25. If it's a desktop pc then who cares. Let it bake.

  26. I had to reinstall windows 7 the other day. SP1 was on the disk. And on top of SP1 I still had over 350 updates. 10 restarts. 1 and a half solid days of updates. It was horrible!

As someone who develops for both Linux and Windows, I can tell you that it is not safer. The only reason Windows restarts it it has to regenerate registries. The other reason is: because Windows is designed so poorly, installing anything could potentially break it. This is because no Windows software is portable. All the DLLs and other resources have to be loaded for each piece of software. This means that Windows has to restart for some of these changes to take affect because this stuff gets loaded on boot. No other operating system does it this way.

  28. This is funny, but as usual, I think too hard about these things. There is nothing whatsoever stopping anyone from going to bed when these updates are being installed. Just turn off your monitor, go to sleep, and when you wake up, your computer will be ready to use.
